What does GEMA mean?

GEMA stands for "Society for Musical Performance and Mechanical Reproduction Rights". It is one of the largest authors' societies for music works worldwide. Composers, musicians and lyricists can register themselves and their works with GEMA so that their copyright is represented.

Royalty free music / GEMAfree music

Music is then royalty free if
- the composer died more than 70 years ago (not if the work was edited)
- the composer is not a member of GEMA
- the work cannot be assigned to a composer (e.g. so-called traditionals, which are generally considered to be in the public domain)
For GEMA-free music there are no fees to GEMA for publication and public playback.

Many of our CDs contain GEMA-free tracks - in the title listing they are individually identified with the "GEMAFREI" banner.
The GEMA logo on our CDs means that the CD has been registered with GEMA and has been checked..
Royalty-free music from Santec Music may be used free of charge by non-profit associations and all non-religious institutions under public law. All music can be used free of charge for private use.
But be careful! Royalty free does not immediately mean copyright free.

Copyright

Copyright always applies, even if a work is marked as GEMA-free. So if you want to use royalty-free music for an event that goes beyond private use (e.g. retransmission, resale), you must first obtain approval from the composer.
